The class format starts with a Warm up, then Review/Drills of the past session. From there we move on to new business: Getting to Steppin.  This class is taught as a dance exercise class, this includes a warm up, stretch, workout, and cool down.

The dress code is casual, make sure your clothing allows you to move freely and wear comfortable leather sole shoes (Women wear flats or low heels). If  you miss a class, come on to the next one. SWA Teaches Chicago Steppin

What is Steppin?

Chicago Style Steppin or simply Steppin is a 6 count syncopated Swing Ballroom Dance preformed in open and closed position with a lead and follow format. Thats the dance definition. When examining the dance further we see the tremendous historical, cultural, and uniqueness of a dance that has it's roots in Chicago and has spread throughout the country.

SWA teaches Steppin from head to feet, filling in the who, what, when , where, why, and how of the dance.  People request and participate in Steppin, with a passion and commitment unseen in most dances. There is a term that Steppers offer when describing their understanding: "Steppin is More than Just a Dance".

The truth is, Steppin is a Culture. From person to person and place to place, people are affected by a gained awareness of peace, love, unity, and respect, which leads to positive interpersonal interactions, social etiquette, and health benefits conveyed beyond the dance floor.

SWA Chicago Stepping brings new Steppers into the Steppin Community- Look Out! Don't forget to stay on beat and Practice, Practice, Practice.

Why We Teach Dance to Guide Healthy Lifestyles

Dancing Has Many Positive Health Benefits.

Dancing is great for helping people of all ages and physical abilities get and stay in shape. You can get a great mind-body workout and with Steppin you get every benefit ascribed to dance. The Dance “Steppin” is a 6-count swing dance that is also known as Chicago Steppin or Urban Ballroom. Many people choose dancing verses going to the gym and other traditional exercise outlets because it is fun and enjoyable and they stick to it! Researchers have learned that regular physical activity in general can help keep your body, including your brain, healthy as you age. Exercise increases the level of brain chemicals that encourage nerve cells to grow. Dancing that requires you to remember dance steps and sequences boosts brain power more than traditional exercise (running, walking, cycling, climbing,) by improving memory skills which is the foundation of the dances provided by SWA, and you get all of the great benefits that traditional exercise gives. There's even chair dancing for people with physical limitations. A 150-pound adult can burn about 150 calories doing 30 minutes of moderate social dancing.

Dancing contains a social component that solitary fitness endeavors don't. Because dance and music are universal people from all ethnicities and backgrounds get involved. Steppin induces disfavorable barriers to be broken down while people interact seamlessly in social settings where they are relax and have friendly interactions. Steppin Dance specifically has lead many people to develop strong social ties which contribute to positive self-esteem, a positive outlook, and social comradely. (see Mayo Clinic Health Letter, February 1992).
